Sofsikā¢ sutures are non-absorbable, sterile, non-mutagenic surgical sutures composed of natural protein silk fibers called fibroin. Braided sutures are available evenly coated with silicone or a special wax mixture.
Sofsikā¢ sutures are used in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation.

Description: | Sofsilkā¢ braided non-absorbable sutures are composed of a natural silk protein fiber: fibroin. This protein is obtained from the silkworm of the species Bombyx mori. The silk fibers undergo a treatment that removes the natural gum, sericin, before being bleached and then braided to produce Sofsilkā¢ silk suture. Sofsilkā¢ sutures are uniformly coated with silicone or a special wax blend which reduces capillarity and increases surface lubricity thereby improving handling characteristics, ease of tissue passage and knot lowering properties. |
Characteristics: | The manufacturing process, from braiding to coating, provides the suture with great softness and adaptability for maximum manageability. The unique coating process provides smooth passage through fabrics with optimal knot security. |
Indications: | Sofsilkā¢ sutures are indicated for the approximation and/or ligation of soft tissues in general, including in cardiovascular, ophthalmic and neurological surgery. |
Actions: | Sofsilkā¢ sutures provoke a minimal acute inflammatory reaction in tissues, followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue. |
Resistance period: | Although Sofsilkā¢ sutures are not absorbed, a progressive degradation of the silk protein fiber in vivo can result in a gradual loss of suture tensile strength over time. |
Sterilization: | Gamma radiation. |
Presentation: | Sofsilkā¢ sutures come colorless or dyed black with logwood extract. Sutures are presented sterile, in strands or coils and mounted on different types of needle, using fixed or removable mounting techniques; in boxes of one, two or three dozen. |
